The House - Stairway

The original stairway separated the hair salon from the rest of the house.  To open up the house, we decided to move the stairway.  It was quite a large project, but we decided it would be best to do it before we even moved in.
The first step was to remove the cupboards and walls surrounding the stairway.  Dad took everything apart for us piece by piece.

Looking at the location of the new stairway.

This is looking underneath the old staircase.  We hired Todd Koopman to do the work of moving the stairway.  A wall was removed to reveal the crawl space that the staircase would come down through.

Todd and his sons first had to haul out buckets and buckets of dirt to clear out this area.  He installed a new wall to close off the area.

You can see here the remaining section of the crawl space.

Todd had to get under the other wall to lay a solid foundation.

Todd then cut out the opening of the stairway.

We decided to put up a half wall to go around instead of a railing.

Back in the basement Dad had to remove the walls that surrounded the stairs.

 Dad then removed the stairs.

 Todd put in new stairs.

This picture shows the wall around the stairs and the old stairway covered up.

The ceiling covered up and the wall drywalled.

Todd installed recess lights around the room and in the kitchen.

The old stairway being sealed up.

The ceiling getting finished up.

 Todd's work is almost done.

 New stairway!
